ACASA’s Calypso Monarch Final featured the ACASA All Stars Band and the Divettes and showcased the rich diversity of the UK’s calypso talent. The event also bore a poignant note this year, honouring the late Shabaka Thompson, one of the founders of London’s Calypso Tent.
Far from commercial music, calypsonians competed for the coveted Calypso Monarch title through witty storytelling, humour, and social commentary. Notable performers included Musicman, Muffinman, Helena B, Clivus, Alexander D Great, De Admiral, G-String, and Lord Cloak, a 13-time champion.
The culmination of ACASA’s 2023 UK Calypso Monarch competition was held on Thursday 24 August at The Tabernacle in Powis Square, with Alexander D Great crowned as UK Calypso Monarch, singing Sometimes.
