Brown Sugar, originally from Trinidad & Tobago hails from Oxford. She has been involved in gospel singing from childhood but branched over to the beloved Calypso genre in her teens. Encouraged and spurred on by a co-worker, she entered her first Calypso competition in 1995 at her then workplace, The Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago. In the UK, Brown Sugar started singing with AJ’s Calypso tent, Reading in 2003 and joined the ABC in 2004. She prides herself representing women in Calypso and is a two-time UK Calypso Monarch and twice won the Groovy Soca competition.
She was runner-up the Calypso Monarch competition and is the reigning Queen of the Tent. In her capacity as UK Monarch, she returned to Trinidad and Tobago, representing The ABC on television and radio interviews. She has also performed and represented The ABC at Alexandra Palace, UK Ms. Trinidad & Tobago, Calabash Awards and Mixed Blessings Awards. She has shared the stage with the late Mighty Duke, Explainer, and Pink Panther. She has made it very clear that Beverley Browne is very shy and will not dare sing in front of a crowd, but Brown Sugar will! Brown Sugar states: “In the Calypso arena, don’t go using my real name if you please. Much thanks to fans and supporters.”
